The May full moon will begin on Sunday May 15 into the early hours of Monday May 16th. This full moon has a long name attached to it; “Super Flower Blood Moon.” And it will be a lunar eclipse as well! The lunar eclipse is expected to start at 10:29 p.m. EDT on Sunday and continue until about 1:54 a.m. EDT on Monday. The moon will receive some sunlight through the atmosphere and will be changing colors. The moon will start off as gray, then pink, and then orange and finally red.
What is a Lunar Eclipse?
A lunar eclipse happens when the whole moon passes along the most inner part of the earth’s shadow. It is then that the Earth blocks all of the direct sunlight from reaching the lunar surface, with sunlight instead scattered by the Earth’s atmosphere and then reflected off of the moon. This is how the moon gets its red hue; also referred to as a blood moon.
We will also be experiencing a super moon! A super moon only occurs a few times a year and has to do with the moon’s orbit changes. The moon will be 30% brighter and about 15% larger than usual.
What is a flower moon?
We call this full moon in May the flower moon because this is the time that flowers start to bloom in abundance across North America.
